Apparently there will be quite a few of the first run hubs that develop the leaking problem.
Dave Larrington said 'The combination of Rohloff and Type 1 Schlumpf Mountain Drive might be worth considering - less weight and complication.'
This could be risky due to excessive torque on the
Rohloff - the Schlumph
web site states 'Please do not combine mountain-drive
with the Rohloff 14-speed hub. The Rohloff hub has a
strict limitation of the entry torque, and may only be
combined with speed-drive.' Presumable would also be a
problem with two Rohloffs linked together or even another
hub gear (as a mid-drive) linked to a Rohloff.
A while
back, someone posted a discourse on Rohloff+MDII,
summarising by saying that he wanted to both use his
trike as a workhorse (slow but strong) but also for the
occasional quick tour (light and fast), and that the
gearing offered by the combination Rohloff+MDII wasn't up
to it. I've just been visiting the HPV
Drivetrain Analyzer and have bunged in the values for
my just-ordered GTO with Rohloff+MDII, stipulating a
nominal 20" rear wheel, and I get a gear range (rounded)
of 15 to 134 gear inches. This is wider by more than ten
inches *at each end* than the range on my Windcheetah.
There is a big overlap with the Rohloff+MDII combination
- the bottom four and the top four are unique, the top
ten of the bottom range and the bottom ten of the top
range are similar. The overall number of distinct gears
is of course relatively small at 28 (18 if you remove
overlap). But even so, this seems a more than adequate
range to support workhorsing as well as fun. Am I missing
something here?
I have a GTO with Rohloff and Schlumpf mountain gear. The low side of the mountain gear is 42x16 and gives gear inches of 14,16.4,18.7,20.9,24.1,27,30.7,34.9,45.1,51.2,58.1,66.1, 75.1. On the high end of the mountain gear 69x16 the gear inches are 23.1,26.6,30.3,34,39,44.4,50.5,57.3,65.1,74.1,84.1,95.5,108.6,123.4. I have a 42 chain ring on the Schlumph and when put into high range it becomes a 69. I have a 16 cog on the Rohloff. So, my gear range is 14 to 123.l4.
