- Here is John Doubledays
method. Make a T piece out of bike
tubing, cutting a slit in the bottom. This then
slides nicely over the derailuer tube and is held in
place by the front derailuer. A bike computer can then be
mounted as if on normal handlebars. If making all from
scratch it probably would be best to make it so the slit
T piece tube is the correct size for a front derailuer to
mount onto and a slightly smaller tube for the riser tube.
If you're cutting the bottom bracket from bike frames,
many frames that weren't made for front derailuers have
this smaller size tubing.
- See the Vision, pic 1, pic2, (anyone know the author of
these pics?) Picture explains enough really. Obtain the
mounting parts from an ex bike steering head.
- A Rubber Stopper made for seat and table feet work well.
Get one that slides over tightly and has sufficient
'body' A bike computer can then be mounted on top, the
rubber damping a little of the vibrations.
- An alternative to having a T piece is to make a U shaped piece at the top of the
tube. A short length of dowel can be screwed between the
ends of the U piece making a bike computer mount. This
all can be fixed to the derailuer tube using one of the
ideas shown above. To fix the U bracket to the tube you
could
- Weld it there.
- Weld the tube end up then tap a thread in the centre so
a bolt fixes the U shaped piece to it.
Instead of dowel you could put into the ends of a short
length of frame tubing, plastic handlebar end caps and
use a long bolt and nut to hold it there.
- Similar to the one above but with a L
piece. A short length of dowel can be screwed to a L
piece of material. This all can be fixed to the derailuer
tube using one of the ideas shown above. To fix the U
bracket to the tube you could
- Weld it there.
- Weld the tube end up then tap a thread in the centre so
a bolt fixes the L shaped piece to it.
The plastic L piece can be taken from a car accessory
gauge.
