New Builder's Photo Gallery

The images in this directory are of my compact recumbent tandem. This is the result of my desire to ride with my wife. Unfortunately the commercial tandems available, both recumbent and safety, were to large and awkward for my tastes. They were also expensive. The tandem in these pictures is 6'6" overall length and 45 pounds on the rode with accessories. It has a 48" wheelbase. The short wheelbase allows us to manuver in very tight areas like bike paths. We are able to U-turn in very small areas. It also rides as a fst single. This tandem is a success. A modified version will be available from Barcroft Cycles. If you want more information, feel freem to e-mail me at kramer-burkhardt@erols.com. Chris Burkhar dthpva #6926

Three pictures of Frank Lienhard's back-to-back tandem low racer: frankt01.jpg: Shows the front end of the tandem in its unfaired state. Note Frank's preferred short cranks - about 120 mm, I think the metal bar running around the front is the fairing mount.: frankt02.jpg: The fairing being prepared for action: frankt03.jpg: Ignore the grinning loon on the Trice, that's Paul London pretending that he doesn't care that he's running last in the race. You're supposed to be looking at that huge white blob in the semi-background. If you have a Junior Pocket Microscope, Model 3a, you can also see Frank, who is the character in the red and black check shirt on the far right All pictures taken during the 1998 European Championships at Roskilde,Denmark. frankt02.jpg by Jonathan Woolrich, the other two by me.

I've uploaded 4 photos of Nick Andrews' prototype folding trike (called simply "TRIKE") to ftp://www.ihpva.org/incoming. All photos were taken by Nigel "The Scouser" Sleigh, at CycleFest '98 in Lancaster. The machine is largely made from carbon fibre, sports full suspension and has a target retail price of £1000, which if achieved makes it SERIOUS value for money. Pics are:nick_01.jpg - side view of the machine.nick_02.jpg - note lack of clearance 'twixt foot and terra firma; this will apparently be addressed in the production version. The rather unsavoury-looking character at the controls is BHPC Treasurer Dennis Adcock.nick_03.jpg - detail of double-wishbone front suspension, just like Herr Schumacher's!nick_04.jpg - rear swing-arm pivot and under-seat luggage space.

My wife, Marilyn, and I both drive small cars and had no way to transport our tandem any distance, forcing us to pass up the many fine organized rides here in our part of the the Midwest (Southern Wisconsin, northern Illinois). There were also a lot of really nice bike trails that were not available to us because of the distances to them from our house.

Our solution, which we just completed, may not appeal to everyone, but it works fine for us. A small trailer to carry the tandem eliminates almost all lifting, leaves the inside of the cars free for our "stuff", doesn't require any disassembly of the bike, and with various add-ons can be used for other missions. The rig is very light and tows easily. If it looks like rain I'll bungee some garbage bags over the seat bottoms.

The trailer came as a bolt-together kit from Menards. They are also available from Northern Hydraulics and probably elsewhere as well.

Trailer1.jpg - This is the $175 trailer kit the way it came from Menards.

Trailer2.jpg - The trailer was rated for an 1100 lb (500 kg) load, so I removed one leaf from each spring to lessen the bouncing over bumps. In combination with 25 psi in the tires, this strategy seems to work.

Trailer3.jpg - The finished trailer with parts from an old donor bike rack, holding our Rans Screamer.

Trailer4.jpg - This is a closer shot of the trailer, showing the simple upright that secures the bike. Both wheels are also strapped to the tray they ride in. You can also see the carbon fiber adaptor for the Esge kickstand.

Trailer5.jpg - A closeup of the carbon adaptor. It wraps partially around three
frame tubes, which are further protected with helicopter tape.

Trailer6.jpg - The bike rides mostly in the wind shadow of the car so shouldn't collect too many bugs in the summer, although it does seem to attract any dust that's in the air.

Trailer7.jpg - "Hey, get off that computer and let's go riding!"

Trailer8.jpg - Just in case we're in a hurry to get to the trail....

A preview look at my 3/4 faired Lighting.
The front fairing is a WISIL bubble, PVC pipe, and Coroplast.
The tailbox is all Coroplast.

I'm creating a webpage showing construction details- be patient.
